Ozzy Manages A Double Minor

Ozzy Manages A Double Minor

During my first semester at USC, I enrolled in COMM 309: Communication & Technology with Professor Dmitri Williams. Professor Williams challenged us during our time together by constantly covering a breadth of topics. Topics included data analytics, user design, interpersonal communication, social networks, and much more. During our lecture on data analytics, I was convinced that I wanted to take a much deeper dive into the world of data analysis. One of the perks of being a freshman in an upper-division course was that numerous upperclassmen in that class were willing to help me to figure out the process of declaring for a minor. They directed me to my Annenberg Advisor, Isaac Vigilla, who then connected me with an academic advisor within Viterbi. After one application and a few days’ wait, I had officially declared a minor in Applied Analytics.

One year later, the Marshall School of Business introduced a new minor, Sports Business and Management. I knew that I couldn't pass up on the opportunity to declare for this minor. Before I knew it, I was double minoring in Applied Analytics and Sports Business and Management!

Though these areas of study may seem very different, they are constantly overlapping. In my applied analytics courses, I learn how to read numbers and trends to make prediction models. In my business courses, I learned how to use the data I collected to build effective business models. Finally, I can use my understanding of interpersonal skills to properly communicate and explain my ideas, findings, and predictions to others.

This upcoming summer I am going to be interning at Madison Square Garden Sports (MSGS) as Group Sales & Strategy Student Associate. During my recruiting process, I was told time and time again about how I stood out in the pool of applicants because of my double minors. Recruiters would get super excited when I would talk to them about the variety of work I was able to do at USC thanks to my double minors. I have no doubt that it's because of this that I was offered a position for this upcoming summer.

The most difficult part about double minoring at USC is having the confidence in yourself to take a leap of faith. USC makes it easy for students to work with a variety of minors and specializations. Most minors can be fit into your four-year plan and it is easy to find students and staff who are willing to help!
